Market research coupled with geospatial modelling to rapidly appraise areas in proximity to an existing carbon storage site as a potential location for a new data centre and dedicated natural gas fired power generation with carbon capture.

Motivation:

Goal7's client, a global developer of low carbon solutions, sought a pre-feasibility level market and geospatial review, to assess the potential for a large scale data centre to be constructed on a greenfield site. The concept included dedicated natural gas fired power generation with carbon capture and be in close proximity to their operated carbon storage appraisal site in the United States.

Our Approach:

  • Provide a high-level framework of the key requirements for a range of data centre sizes, including water, power, fiber, and land requirements
  • Utilise geospatial mapping to characterise, filter and grade potential development locations in proximity to the planned CO2 storage site, based on a range of key factors, including:
    • Fiber tie in points, water availability, grid connection, severe weather potential (hurricane, tornado, flood), and land availability
  • Assess federal and regional support including potential funding opportunities and tax incentives
  • Detail steps required to mature the concept to the next stage
    • Informed discussion with potential data centre developers seeking dedicated low carbon power generation in the region

Benefit and Impact:

  • Educate client of the key requirements to host a data centre
  • Assessment of the suitability of land close to the CO2 storage site
  • Highlighted potential locations as a basis for detailed assessment and discussions with potential developers
