Feasibility assessment of credible transport and storage (T&S) options from an emitter in the UK. Project included an initial screening of a wide range of potential value chains before carrying out a more detailed techno-economic assessment of shortlisted options.

Motivation: 

The client has  developed its own Carbon Management Plan to achieve net zero by 2050, which places efforts in six key focus areas, including CCUS. The site assessed in this study was interested in exploring the capture of its CO2, and as such, Goal7 was asked to carry out an assessment on possible routes to permanent geological storage in the UK. 

Our Approach: 

Goal7 cast a wide net to develop credible route-to-store options, which formed the long list of value chain options. These were then screened during a workshop with both Goal7 and the client's involvement, resulting in a shortlist of value chains of most interest for the techno-economic assessment. The techno-economic assessment included transport logistics, high level safety, schedule, emissions, levelised cost of transport (LCoT), and store tariff indications for value chains comprising pipeline, rail, road, and shipping elements. Goal7 also delivered knowledge-sharing sessions to the client to support the development of their understanding of CCS transportation.

Benefit and Impact: 

This study provided the client with a deeper understanding of CCS and the T&S options available to the site. Through evaluating the specific challenges and opportunities of each value chain, this assessment offered guidance on how to export the CO2 from the site and into a T&S network or aggregation terminal, while also highlighting key stakeholders along each value chain for future engagement to support further maturity of the project.
