Measuring, managing, and reducing our business emissions

We are very conscious of our own impact as a business, and we aim to be as transparent as possible about our journey to reduce our emissions and increase our positive impact. We often find ourselves advising clients that measurement is key to managing change, so we are following our own advice and calculating our internal emissions as a first step to emissions reduction. There is always more work to do around this, and we intend to set emissions reduction targets off the back of this baselining work. With transparency in mind, we have chosen to publish this data.

Our Progress

Protecting our environment lies at the heart of what we do, and we keep it central to all aspects of our work. Our team are all driven by our own individual sustainability convictions and together, share the mindset that great things can happen when we work together.

What are we up to

We are passionate about helping our clients in their sustainability journeys and ensure that our passion won't be compromised in the work that we do. We have a screening process to ensure that every new project we deliver aligns with our values, and will help our clients reach their sustainability goals.

As a business we understand that one of the first things we can do to honour our sustainability conviction is to track our own emissions to quantify and reduce. We do this by tracking our travel emissions including hotel stays and our working from home emissions using our own in-house developed app. We produce a report and review it quarterly as a team. Working from home emissions are recorded monthly and include individuals providing information on home size, heating type and how many people are at their home also working. Hybrid working actively lowers our emissions as well as supports flexible working for our team.

Additionally, with both our offices located in Aberdeenshire and Glasgow, a short walk to the local train station provides a low carbon travel method to take us from city to shire. On activities that are a little further away, we car share where possible.

Our office is a printerless space, and we try to avoid paper wherever possible.

We also have LED lighting, favouring its longer life span. Much of our furniture is second-hand from desks to chairs, and we allow employees to use existing equipment if they prefer rather than buying a brand-new set up for every new employee. After all, if it ain’t broke…

Our to do list

Client emissions reduction is our bread and butter, therefore making it important that we stop to focus on our own emissions from time to time. As you can see, we’ve been tracking our emissions for some time. As we continue to grow as a company it’s essential we keep our own impact in mind and our emissions data helps us achieve this.

In our current rented office space we have limited control over our heating and electricity source. As we continue to grow and expand into our own space we are passionate about taking more ownership of this.

Getting started with procuring new tech like laptops and work from home equipment over the past few years means there will inevitably come a time when things break or need to be upgraded or replaced. As it stands we have no guiding principles on what to do when this situation arises, however we want to promote a culture whereby we minimise waste to landfill and give a second life to the things we use in daily life. We aim to generate guiding principles which cover leavers, new starts, broken, or old equipment to think about the route our obsolete tech will take when we no longer have a use for it.

Our monthly company in-persons are fantastic for team building, brainstorming, and getting the team together, however we’ve noticed that we tend to have a surplus of food.  We have been fortunate on occasion to be able to donate untouched food to a local charity but we recognise that we need to greater responsibility and action on this going forward. This could be through more conscientious preparation, ongoing food donations, or thinking a bit more outside the box on ways to reduce this waste like taking our own containers from home.
