Feasibility assessment of transport and storage (T&S) options for an energy from waste (EfW) site in the UK. Project included an initial screening of potential T&S options, techno-economic assessment of shortlisted options, and developing a roadmap to inform the site's CCS deployment strategy
Motivation:
The client, an energy from waste facility, is exploring feasible options for CCS deployment, with a focus on alternatives to pipeline-based transport of CO2 from its site. Goal7 was tasked with proposing a roadmap based on an assessment of credible pipeline and non-pipeline based transport routes to storage.
Our Approach:
Goal7 developed a long list of emitter-to-store value chains that encompassed pipeline, rail, truck and ship based transport. These options were developed considering Track and merchant stores, viable transport routes and available funding mechanisms to support deployment. At a joint workshop between Goal7 and the client, these options were screened further into a short list of value chains for Goal7 to assess further by techno-economic assessment, which included conditioning, transport logistics, emissions, high level safety, costs, and levelised cost of abatement (LCoA). This then informed a risk assessment and final CCS strategy roadmap which advised on 'priority' and 'back up' value chains, a proposed work programme for further assessment of CCS, and scenarios which should trigger a strategy refresh.
Benefit and Impact:
The outcomes of this study informed the client's immediate and medium-term work programme, with a primary and alternative plan established to support feasible CCS deployment. The study also provided the client with credible insights to support engagement with relevant value chain players such as terminal and store operators.
