Delivered high-level technical and economic assessments to evaluate options for curtailed power use, including hydrogen, P2X, and energy storage — supporting fast, informed decision-making and concept prioritisation.

Motivation:

The client was looking to assess and screen out a variety of possible concepts for the use of curtailed power, including the production of hydrogen or its derivatives, compressed gas energy storage, and gas to wire.

Our Approach:

Each of the different concepts were assessed first on a technical basis to determine whether they offered  a technically robust use for the curtailed power. This included reviews such as P2X transportation viability, technology maturity, and output efficiency. A high level economic screening was then developed, based on allowable project CAPEX through NPV=0 calculation, using cost blocks developed throughout the technical assessment.

A red, amber, green matrix was created and shared with the client to advise on which concepts should be investigated further.

Benefit and Impact:

The high level technical and economic screening provided a framework for quick decision making for the project, enabling a high number of potential concept options to be narrowed down for further areas of study.
